No Other Gods, Only Me

No Other Gods, Only Me

"You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea."
Deuteronomy 5:7–8 (NLT)

This command remains as relevant today as it was when God first spoke it. Though we may no longer bow before carved images, idols still fill our world—and often, our hearts. They may take the form of wealth, achievements, relationships, power, or self.

The human heart is easily tempted to worship the works of its own hands. We begin to believe our effort or wisdom has earned us success. That’s why God reminded Israel not to forget Him in their prosperity:

"You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’"
Deuteronomy 8:17

Jesus told a similar story about a rich man who trusted in his abundance rather than in God:

"I’ll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’"
Luke 12:19–21

When we place anything—no matter how good—in the place of God, it becomes an idol. No other god, not wealth, not status, not self, can satisfy or save.

Only God deserves our worship.
Only God deserves our trust.
Only God deserves our heart.

Let us remember: No other gods—only Him.

Reflection

What are the things subtly competing for God’s place in your life? Is it your job, your possessions, your comfort, or your own plans? Take a moment to examine your heart and surrender those idols to Him. True peace and fulfillment are found only when God is at the center.

Prayer

Father,
Forgive me for the times I have allowed other things to take Your place in my heart. Help me to recognize the idols I’ve built—whether of pride, possessions, or self-reliance—and tear them down. Teach me to worship You alone, to depend on You alone, and to honor You above all else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Have a fruitful day,
