Alternative to War
Alternative to War
"If they answer, ‘Yes, peace!’ and open the city to you, then everyone found there will be conscripted as forced laborers and work for you." — Deuteronomy 20:11
Peace is always better than war. Scripture calls us to “follow peace with all men” and to do all that lies within our power to live peaceably with others.
“If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” — Romans 12:18 (AMP)
In our text, Israel was instructed to always give room for peace before resorting to battle. If their enemies offered peace, the war was unnecessary. The principle still stands today: where peace is possible, conflict should cease.
Peace, however, is not merely the absence of war—it is the presence of God. Jesus said,
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you... not as the world gives.” — John 14:27
From Him, we receive three dimensions of peace:
Peace with God — through faith in Christ, our sins are forgiven, and we are reconciled to God.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” — Romans 5:1
Peace of God — the inner calm that guards our hearts and minds against anxiety and fear.
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:7
Peace from God — the divine blessing that flows continually to His children.
“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” — Romans 1:7
As believers, we are called to carry and share this peace wherever we go. The world may thrive on conflict, but God’s people are called to be peacemakers.
Reflection:
Are you a bearer of peace in your relationships, home, and community? When faced with conflict, do you choose peace or pride? Remember, peace is always an alternative to war—and it begins within you.
Prayer:
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Teach me to seek reconciliation where there is strife and to extend the same peace You have given me to others. May Your peace rule my heart and flow through me to the world. Amen.
Have a fruitful day,
