For One of These Little Ones
For One of These Little Ones
"Joshua ordered the two men who had spied out the land, ‘Enter the house of the harlot and rescue the woman and everyone connected with her, just as you promised her.’” (Joshua 6:22)
Joshua remembered the promise made in the heat of danger. When the spies were sent to survey Jericho, they were nearly captured, but Rahab hid them and helped them escape. Before they left, they pledged to spare her and her family when Israel attacked the city. When the moment came—amid victory, chaos, and conquest—Joshua ensured that the promise was honoured.
What stands out is that the spies and the leaders of Israel could easily have walked away. Rahab was a foreigner, a woman of ill repute, and powerless. No one would have questioned them if they had broken their word. Yet they chose faithfulness over convenience. They chose integrity over indifference. This reveals strong character: doing what is right even when there is no immediate consequence for doing wrong.
This brings to mind Jesus’ teaching about “the least of these.” Our treatment of the vulnerable, the overlooked, and the disadvantaged is not forgotten by God. As Jesus said:“
I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.” (Matthew 25:43, KJV)
What we do for the underdog speaks loudly about who we truly are. Especially when we think no one is watching. There is, however, a God who holds all people accountable. Faithfulness to “one of these little ones” is faithfulness to God Himself.
Brief Reflection
True righteousness is revealed in private choices, not public applause. God watches how we treat those who cannot repay us or defend themselves. Keeping our word and showing mercy to the least among us reflects the heart of Christ.
Prayer
Lord, give me a heart that values integrity and compassion. Help me to keep my word, even when it costs me nothing to break it. Teach me to see You in the lives of the forgotten and the vulnerable. May my actions honour You, especially when no one else is watching. Amen.
Have a fruitful day,
