History Scarcely Speaks of Failure
History Scarcely Speaks of Failure
"Then Joshua addressed all the people: ‘This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: A long time ago your ancestors—Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor—lived beyond the River Euphrates and worshiped other gods.’” (Josh. 24:2)
History often celebrates success but rarely dwells on failure. The news and public records are filled with stories of people who achieved greatness. Their accomplishments are highlighted with admiration, and many are encouraged to emulate them. Yet behind many celebrated stories are forgotten beginnings, struggles, and even moments of hesitation that history scarcely mentions.
In Joshua’s address to Israel, he reminds them of their past. He speaks of Terah, Abraham, and Nahor, ancestors who once lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. From the book of Genesis, we learn that Terah initially began the journey toward Canaan. “
Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot (Haran’s son), and Sarai his daughter-in-law (his son Abram’s wife) and set out with them from Ur of the Chaldees for the land of Canaan. But when they got as far as Haran, they settled there.” (Gen. 11:31)
Terah started the journey but stopped halfway. Instead of continuing to the land God intended, he settled in Haran. Starting well is not enough; we must also continue faithfully.
Abraham, however, did not remain where his father stopped. When God called him, he obeyed and moved forward. “
Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee.” (Gen. 12:1 KJV)
The structure of that statement suggests Abraham had heard those words earlier, but when his father Terah died, God reminded him that it was time to move. Because Abraham obeyed and continued the journey, his story has been remembered through the generations.
Today we speak often of Abraham but scarcely of Terah.
Do not settle where God intends you to advance. Do not build a monument where God is building a movement. Stay aligned with God and keep moving when He calls.
Reflection
Sometimes we stop where we should only pause. God calls us to keep moving in faith and obedience. Like Abraham, we must refuse to settle in places where God intends us to grow.
Prayer
Lord, help me not to settle where You have called me to move forward. Give me the courage to follow Your voice and remain faithful to Your purpose for my life. Amen.
Have a fruitful day,
