God Did His Part, Now Do Yours

God Did His Part, Now Do Yours

"When he realized who it was, he ripped his clothes, saying, ‘Ah, dearest daughter—I’m ruined! I’m devastated! I made a vow to GOD and I can’t take it back!’ She said, ‘My father, if you made a vow to GOD, then do to me according to your vow, since the LORD has given you victory over your enemies.’" (Judg. 11:35–36)

Balance is important in spiritual matters. Many people fall into dangerous extremes when zeal is not guided by truth and understanding. Scripture must be interpreted in the light of God’s nature and His established principles.

Jephthah’s story is one of those difficult but deeply instructive passages in the Bible. Before going to battle against the Ammonites, Jephthah made a rash vow that if God gave him victory, whatever first came out of his house to welcome him would be offered as a sacrifice to God. Tragically, it was his only daughter who came out to greet him.

The pain in Jephthah’s reaction was overwhelming. Yet his daughter responded with remarkable courage, reminding him that God had fulfilled His part by granting victory, and now he must fulfill his own part.

As admirable as their sincerity may seem, sincerity alone does not make an action right. God never approved of human sacrifice; in fact, He strongly condemned it. Jephthah should have understood that obedience to God can never require violating God’s own commands. No vow should lead a man into disobedience against the very God he claims to honour.

Still, there is a lesson here we cannot ignore: God does His part, and man must also do his. God grants grace, mercy, promises, and victory, but we are called to respond with faith, obedience, and trust. Our part is not to invent extreme acts of devotion, but to believe Him, walk with Him, and obey His Word rightly.

God has already done His part through His promises, His power, and ultimately through Christ. The question is: will you do yours by trusting and obeying Him?

Reflection
True spirituality is not measured by emotional intensity or dramatic sacrifices, but by obedience rooted in truth. God does not delight in reckless promises; He delights in hearts that believe and follow Him wisely. Faith must always align with God’s character and His Word.

Prayer
Lord, thank You because You are always faithful to do Your part. Give me wisdom to walk in obedience and understanding. Help me never to act out of zeal without truth, but to honour You according to Your Word. Teach me to trust You fully and to faithfully do the part You require of me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Have a fruitful day,
