The Lord Knows Those Who Are His
The Lord Knows Those Who Are His
"Then they cleaned house of the foreign gods and worshiped only GOD. And GOD took Israel's troubles to heart." (Judg.10.16
Israel had once again drifted into compromise. They had turned away from God and found themselves abandoned to the oppression of their enemies. Their suffering was not because God lacked power to save, but because their hearts had wandered far from Him.
But something changed.
The Bible says they cleaned house of the foreign gods and worshiped the Lord alone. Then God took their troubles to heart. What a powerful statement! It reveals that all their previous religious activities had not truly moved God because their hearts were divided. They may have still offered sacrifices and maintained outward forms of worship, but inwardly they were attached to other gods.
God is not merely looking for activity; He is looking for sincerity and devotion. Scripture says, “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” (2 Tim. 2:19)
It is possible to attend church, sing in the choir, give offerings, and remain active in ministry, yet still keep idols hidden in the heart. One genuine act of repentance from Israel caused God to respond with compassion. Their outward actions finally matched an inward surrender.
God desires broken hearts more than religious appearances. He wants truth in the inward parts. As the prophet declared, we are to rend our hearts and not merely our garments.
Brief Reflection
God is not impressed by empty rituals or religious performance. He responds to hearts that are truly surrendered to Him. The question is not simply whether we worship, but whether our worship is genuine. Are there “foreign gods” competing for God’s place in our hearts—pride, bitterness, greed, lust, ambition, or self-dependence? When we truly return to Him, He still takes our troubles to heart.
Prayer
Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that competes with You in my life. Remove every idol and every divided affection within me. Help me to worship You in spirit and in truth, not merely through outward activities but with a sincere and surrendered heart. Let my life bring You pleasure, and may Your mercy speak over every trouble surrounding me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Have a fruitful day,
