False Brothers

When I saw the expression "false brothers", I had to double-check because as far as I am concerned, the concept of 'brotherhood' and 'being false' should not be used side by side in the same sentence.

"This matter arose because some false brothers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves." (Gal.2.4 NIV)

I am reminded of the first family and how dysfunctional the brotherhood was exemplified. But that was not false brothers. It was just brothers fighting. But when wolves put on sheep's clothing, then false brotherhood comes to play. People who are one thing in your presence and then something else in your absence.

Notice from the onset, their motive was to deceive. As a result, they pretended to be brothers to infiltrate the ranks to spy on their freedom and then reduce them to slaves.

"While we were in conference we were infiltrated by spies pretending to be Christians, who slipped in to find out just how free true Christians are. Their ulterior motive was to reduce us to their brand of servitude." (Gal.2.4 MSG)

The Message translation says the reason they infiltrated was to reduce us to their brand of slavery

Refuse to be reduced to this brand of slavery. Every time there is a false brotherhood, it reduces to a brand of slavery. The Apostle told us to mark such people that cause division and then avoid them.

"Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them." (Rom.16.17)

The lessons for all of us to learn are, one, to not be false brothers because it reduces the person and two, to avoid such as are false brothers.
