The choice to live and not to die

Suicide is never an option but a desire to that effect is a daily reality for most people. The Apostle Paul tells us that he had suicidal tendencies. Maybe his was a passive one - that is, wanting to die without having a plan.

Now we must understand that the Apostle Paul spent a better part of his life in prison. He wrote this letter from prison to the Philippines. And he may not have had it easy. He says he had a hard choice to make, either to break camp here and be with Christ or stay here. And that some days, he could think of nothing better. Hmm

"Hard choice! The desire to break camp here and be with Christ is powerful. Some days I can think of nothing better". (Phil.1.23 MSG)

Another very prominent Bible character that expressed this desire was Elijah. After he had slain 400 prophets of Baal and Queen Jezebel was after him.

"But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers." (1Kgs.19.4) Here again, it was a passive suicidal tendency.

The struggle is real. These tendencies are in a lot of people. But we must always remember that we have to choose life. The Apostle Paul calls it a "hard choice".

Moses tells us to choose life. "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:" (Deut.30.19)

We must choose life despite it all. Choosing life means talking to someone about the struggle, the tendency. Seeking help from a professional. Don't keep it to yourself. The choice to live and not to die. The plan to fulfill all God has for us is in choosing to live and not to die. Choose life, a hard choice it may be but it is worth it. Choose life

And have a great day today,
