Why fight if the devil is defeated?

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (Eph.6.12)

This one question I believe runs through the minds of many believers. Someone had asked, "if the devil is defeated, why do we need to fight? I am also interested in the answer to that question responded another.

Let's go back to the garden of Eden. Even before Eden, when there was a war in heaven, Micheal drove the devil and his cohorts from heaven.

"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
(Rev:12:7)

And then verse 8 has this to say, "And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven." (Rev.12.8) There was no place found in heaven for the devil.

Now, remember that in Eden, the man was given dominion over the earth.

"And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." (Gen:1:28)

You can also see this in Ps.115.16 "The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men."

But when the devil was driven down, he succeeded in deceiving man in the garden of Eden and then became the god of this world (2 Cor:4;4)

The Apostle Paul told us in Eph.4.27 to "give place to the devil."

Why? Because even though the devil is defeated, he is still seeking to trip God's people. He is still lying in wait to deceive and lead men away from the truth. (see 1Pt"5:8)

Little wonder we are told to stand. Stand therefore, having done all stand. (see Eph:6:11)

How do we stand? We stand on the finished work of the cross. We stand by speaking regularly what the word of God says instead of the situation. We stand in the victory that Christ has secured for us. We fight not to win because we have already won, we fight to remain victorious. We resist the devil "steadfastly in faith (see 1Pet:5:9)

So we fight to give the devil no place just like Michael and his host did in Rev:12:8. We stand in our victory."

Stand therefore... "(Eph:6:14)

  3. God bless you, sir.
Only if present day christians will truly understand this revelation, that we're not fighting to win - we've been declared victorious already through the finished work of Christ - but we're fighting to maintain our handed down victory and dominion.
