Conscience

"Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron. (1Tim.4.9)

The Psalmist says everything is speaking. The heavens declare the glory of God. It says every day utters speech and night shows knowledge and that these plethoras of voices are heard everywhere.

"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard." (Ps.19.1- 3)

And then we are told that not one of these voices is without significance

"There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification." (1Cor.14.10)

Your feeling is the voice of your flesh. And most of us are trained to hear only the voice of our flesh. If it feels right do it. If it doesn't feel right don't do it. You only listen to your flesh.

Others only listen to the voice of reason. If they can not think their way through, they are not through. Reasoning is the voice of your soul. In the soul, you have your mind where reasoning resides.

Your conscience is the voice of your spirit. It does not matter whether you are a Christian or not. We all have a conscience. And our conscience adapts to our concept of wrong or right based on how it has been trained. Hence you hear some people say certain things and you are wondering, "do they have a conscience?"

The Bible talks about evil conscience (see Heb:10:22), weak conscience (see 1 Cor:8:12), good conscience (see Acts:23:1), and pure conscience (see 1Tim:3:8))

But our text talks about a seared conscience. This a conscience that has become hardened as a result of consistent practice of what it once considered wrong.

But if you train your conscience well enough to line up with the word of God, your conscience will be a tool in the hands of the Spirit of God to lead you in the path of righteousness. You train your conscience by listening to it, repent when it pricks you, and adapt it to the word of God. Do not sear your conscience.
