For God's sake

"Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed." (1Tim.6.1)

Counting your masters worthy of all honour. This is an honourable statement. To count one worthy of the honour that one has to be honourable. But that isn't the Apostle Paul's admonition. He seems to be saying that the only reason he qualifies for honour is that he is your master.

To be honoured, one has to do honourable things but the Apostle says whether he does honourable things or not, he deserves your honour. And he says the reason for this is so that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.

Then you argue that he has you under the yoke of servitude. He is a hard boss, he is a difficult supervisor - count him worthy of honour. And you are doing this for God's sake.

This reminds me of what the Lord does for us for his name's sake. Psalm:23:3 says "He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake." (Ps.23.3)

There are certain things God does for us just so His name is not dragged in the mud. He leads us in the path of righteousness for His name's sake. So also, He says we should do for the sake of His name and doctrine be not blasphemed.

Do it because you're thinking more highly of God's name than you are of your ego or your convenience.  Certain things you let go for His name's sake. Give honour to your boss, for His name's sake. Do it for God's sake.

Happy New Month
