Christian slave masters

"Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them." (1Tim.6.2 NIV)

The term Christian slaver masters is indeed an aberration in itself but I will ask that you stretch your mind to accommodate not only masters and slaves as mentioned in our text but also the relationship between a boss and a subordinate, a client and a customer relationship manager, a visitor and a family member.

We have looked at a believer honouring his unbelieving master but today we will look at honouring a believing master. And Paul says do not show them less respect because they are brothers - as in Christian brothers.

Let us take a detour here to mention this. It is interesting how we tend to honour outsiders more than we do insiders, especially in the home setting. How we treat visitors with a certain decorum that those inside do not get. How when a visitor comes calling, we bring down the dishes reserved for a special occasion but we tend to treat "insiders" with a certain familiarity that breeds contempt.

The Apostle Paul seems to be saying, do not do that. He says to treat them even better. And I will suggest that if you keep the measuring stick you would use for the Lord handy and make that your standard, you will not have to think whether they are believers or not, whether they are insiders or not, whether they are family or visitors, you just learn to treat people with love. Love indeed, is the measuring stick.
