Words are not mere words

The Apostle Paul was very particular about words, knowing the effect that words have and the impact they make. So he tells Timothy to stay clear of silly stories dressed up as religion.

"Stay clear of silly stories that get dressed up as religion. Exercise daily in God--no spiritual flabbiness, please!" (1Tim.4.7)

And in his second book to Timothy, he repeats the same admonition.

"Stay clear of pious talk that is only talk. Words are not mere words, you know. If they're not backed by a godly life, they accumulate as poison in the soul. Hymenaeus and Philetus are examples, throwing believers off stride and missing the truth by a mile by saying the resurrection is over and done with." (2Tim.2.16-18)

You can replace the word pious with religious. And he says that words are not just mere words. They have an effect, they have consequences, and they impact. Proverbs tells us that words have the power to make us alive or to kill.

He says if words are not backed up with godly life, they accumulate as poison in the soul. And this is very important because it is by words that our soul is renewed. Roman 12:2 say we are transformed by the renewing of our mind. Our mind is a component of our soul. It is the engrafted word that can save your soul.

"Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls." (Jas.1.21)

The word you repeatedly hear determines the direction of your life. If you hear faith-filled words, your life will reflect it, otherwise, it will show also. Little wonder the Apostle says we should keep hearing God's word. As in hearing it faith is formed in our hearts. Words are not mere words, they can make or mare you. Be careful how and what you hear. Are you "hearing by" the word of God?
