Command respect

"Tell [them all] these things. Urge (advise, encourage, warn) and rebuke with full authority. Let no one despise or disregard or think little of you [conduct yourself and your teaching so as to command respect]." (Titus.2.15 AMP)

We have heard it said, whatever you do people will talk about you, whether you do the right thing or the wrong thing. It also appears true that you can't help what people think about you but this verse says otherwise.

Though it addresses the leader of the church in Crete we can apply the lesson to our lives. It began by saying, "let no one despise or disregard or think little of you". But we have heard it said that we can't help what others think of us. Here he suggests a way to help others think rightly of you. He says to conduct yourself and your teaching so as to command respect.

Respect is not given, it is not taken, it is earned. And the way to earn it is to conduct yourself in such a way that you command it.

When a command is in the mouth of the one who knows his or her authority, that command is bound to be respected. So he says command respect not by demanding it but by earning it through your conduct, that way, you earn respect... command respect
