In righteousness is peace

"Abraham in turn gave him a tenth of the spoils. "Melchizedek" means "King of Righteousness. Salem" means "Peace." So, he is also "King of Peace." (Heb.7.2 MSB)

Melchizedek means righteousness. That means one who has a right standing with God. And because he has a right standing with God he became King of Salem, therefore king of peace. He is righteous, he is therefore King of peace. It has been said that peace is not the absence of war but of justice. We cannot enjoy peace unless there is righteousness.

We see in our text that before Melchizedek became king of peace he was first, king of righteousness. Right living, doing, and acting right will engender peace.

So if we want to enjoy the peace of God, the kind of peace that is restful and does not agitate, the peace that God gives, righteousness is the precursor.

The Bible talks about the fruit that righteousness bears. It calls it peace.

"Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” (Heb.12.11)

Doing right proceed from being right. Being right proceeds from thinking right. Thinking right proceed from feeding your mind with the word of God. May God's peace be with you. Amen
