God Will Make You Great

God Will Make You Great

On that day the LORD exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they stood in awe of him, just as they had stood in awe of Moses all the days of his life.” (Joshua 4:14)

There is truly no such thing as a self-made man or woman. Even when our efforts are visible, and our discipline and diligence are evident, the unseen hand of God is always at work behind genuine greatness. People may overlook the support of others, but no one can deny the decisive role of God. He alone makes people great.

Scripture is clear that God is the ultimate Judge of human affairs. Promotion does not come by chance or merely by human striving.

It is God alone who judges; He decides who will rise and who will fall.” (Psalm 75:7 NLT)

As we see in our text, it was God who made Joshua great in the sight of all Israel. Joshua obeyed, laboured, and followed God faithfully, yet it was the Lord who exalted him. This is why the psalmist declares:

Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” (Psalm 127:1)

This does not discourage effort; rather, it puts effort in its proper place. We are to work diligently, give our best, and remain faithful, while acknowledging that God has the final say. He lifts one and brings down another according to His perfect will.

The Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomever He will.” (Daniel 4:17)

However, as New Testament believers, we have a greater assurance. Jesus reminds us that God’s heart toward us is generous and loving. It is not His reluctance but His pleasure to bless and elevate His children.

Don’t be afraid. You’re my dearest friends! The Father delights in giving you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32)

This is our confidence: the same God who made Joshua great is committed to making His children great according to His purpose. Trust Him, walk in obedience, and rest in the assurance that God will make you great.

Reflection
Are you striving in your own strength or trusting God as the source of your lifting? While diligence is necessary, true greatness comes from God alone. Examine your heart—are you depending on your abilities, or are you yielding your efforts to the One who exalts in due season?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that You are the source of all greatness and promotion. Help me to work faithfully while trusting completely in You. Remove pride, fear, and self-reliance from my heart. Exalt me according to Your will and for Your glory alone. Thank You for Your pleasure in blessing Your children. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Have a fruitful day,
