Why It Is Important To Show Up

Image
Why It Is Important to Show Up Hook Many of life's greatest blessings are hidden behind ordinary acts of obedience. The opportunity that changes your life often begins with something as simple as showing up. Scripture "One day Ruth said to Naomi, 'Let me go out into the fields to gather leftover grain behind anyone who will let me do it.' And Naomi said, 'All right, my daughter, go ahead.'" — Ruth 2:2 (NLT) Explanation Ruth had no guarantee that going to the fields would change her life. She wasn't looking for a husband, a fortune, or a place in history. She simply chose to do what needed to be done. She showed up. Had Ruth remained at home, she would never have encountered Boaz. Had she stayed inactive, she would have missed the opportunity God had already prepared for her. Her willingness to step out in faith placed her in the path of divine providence. Too often, we wait for perfect conditions, special invitations, or everyone...

It So Happened

Image
It So Happened Hook There are moments in life that seem accidental, random, or even disappointing. Yet, behind what appears to be coincidence, God is often quietly arranging the pieces of our destiny. What we call chance, God calls providence. Scripture "It so happened that Naomi had a relative by marriage, a man prominent and rich, connected with Elimelech's family. His name was Boaz." ( Ruth 2:1 ) Explanation After losing her husband and sons, Naomi saw herself through the lens of her pain and asked to be called Mara —"bitter"—instead of Naomi —"pleasant." In her grief, she overlooked an important fact: God had already positioned a kinsman-redeemer named Boaz within her reach. What seemed like a hopeless ending was actually the beginning of a divine turnaround. The Bible simply says, "It so happened." But behind those words was the unseen hand of God. Boaz's existence was no accident. God had factored him into Naomi...

Fix Your Focus

Image
Fix Your Focus Hook What you focus on determines how you feel, how you respond, and ultimately where you are headed. The same situation can either become a reason for despair or an opportunity for hope, depending on the perspective through which you view it. Sometimes God is already working, but our eyes are fixed on what we have lost rather than on what He is providing. Scripture "And so Naomi returned from Moab, accompanied by her daughter-in-law Ruth the Moabite, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning." ( Ruth 1:J22 ) Explanation Perspective matters. The way we interpret the events of our lives often determines whether we walk in bitterness or in hope. Naomi left Bethlehem because of a famine. Her decision seemed logical at the time, but it was based more on what she could see than on what God might be doing. In Moab, she lost her husband and her sons, and when she finally returned home, she concluded that God had ruined her life. She...

The Lord Brought Me Home Again

Image
The Lord Brought Me Home Again Hook Have you ever felt that life has taken more from you than it has given? Perhaps you have experienced painful losses and wondered what was left worth celebrating. Yet, even in seasons of emptiness, God often leaves us with blessings we fail to recognize. Sometimes, what feels like an ending is actually God bringing us back for a greater purpose. Scripture "I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?" ( Ruth 1:21 KJV) Explanation Naomi measured her life by what she had lost. She had left Bethlehem with a husband and two sons, hoping for a better future in Moab. Instead, tragedy struck, and she returned home grieving and convinced that she was empty. But Naomi's perspective was limited by her pain. Though she had lost much, she had not lost everything. God had preserved her life, given her the lo...

Naomi... Not Mara

Image
Naomi… Not Mara Hook Life has a way of trying to rename us. Pain, disappointment, failure, loss, and rejection often whisper, "This is who you are now." But a difficult season should never become a permanent identity. Your circumstances may change, but God's purpose for your life remains unchanged. Scripture "And she said to them, Call me not Naomi [pleasant]; call me Mara [bitter], for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me." — Ruth 1:20 (AMP) Explanation After losing her husband and sons, Naomi returned to Bethlehem overwhelmed by grief. So painful was her experience that she asked people to stop calling her Naomi , meaning pleasant , and instead call her Mara , meaning bitter . How often do we do the same? We define ourselves—or others—by our worst moments. We speak of "the blind boy," "the abandoned woman," "the failed businessman," or "the childless couple." As hurtful as it is when others l...

The Power of A Made-Up Mind

Image
The Power of a Made-Up Mind Hook Many people have good intentions, big dreams, and noble goals. They want to start a business, write a book, pursue a calling, or deepen their walk with God. Yet many never move beyond wishing because they lack one crucial ingredient: a made-up mind. Scripture "So when Naomi saw that Ruth had made up her mind to go with her, she stopped urging her." — Ruth 1:18 (NLT) Explanation One of the most powerful forces in life is a made-up mind. When a person truly settles a matter in their heart, obstacles become challenges to overcome rather than excuses to quit. Ruth had every reason to turn back. Her future was uncertain. She was leaving her homeland, her people, and everything familiar. Yet she made a decision and refused to be swayed. Her commitment was so evident that Naomi could see it. The Bible says, "Naomi saw that Ruth had made up her mind ." A made-up mind produces perseverance. It keeps you moving when circum...

kissers and Cleavers

Image
Kissers and Cleavers Hook Have you noticed that some people leave when the road gets difficult, while others stay even when they have every reason to walk away? Life has a way of revealing who is merely attached to us and who is genuinely committed to our journey. Scripture "Again they wept aloud. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her." (Ruth 1:14) Explanation Naomi, Ruth, and Orpah were traveling together toward Israel after experiencing deep personal loss. Along the way, Naomi encouraged her daughters-in-law to return to their families and pursue a future that seemed more promising. She wasn't being selfish; she was being thoughtful and considerate of their welfare. Faced with this life-changing decision, Orpah eventually accepted Naomi's advice. She kissed her goodbye and returned home. There was nothing wrong with her decision. It simply meant her path was different from Naomi's. Ruth, however, made a different...

But the Israelites Strategized

Image
But the Israelites Strategized Have you ever wondered why some people keep trying harder but never seem to get different results? Sometimes the problem is not a lack of effort, prayer, or faith—it is a lack of strategy. Scripture "But the Israelites strategized: 'Now let's retreat and pull them out of the city onto the main roads.' So every Israelite moved farther out to Baal Tamar; at the same time the Israelite ambush rushed from its place west of Gibeah." (Judges 20:33) Explanation There is a popular saying: "A place for everything and everything in its place." Success often requires more than desire; it requires planning and strategy. Strategy is choosing the best course of action from several available options. It involves thinking, evaluating, and intentionally positioning yourself for victory. The Israelites learned this lesson the hard way. Following the horrific murder of the Levite's concubine, they went to war against ...

When Serving God Seems Like A Loss

Image
When Serving God Seems Like a Loss Have you ever obeyed God and felt like it was costing you more than it was benefiting you? Have you ever done the right thing, only to watch those doing wrong appear to prosper? In moments like these, it's easy to wonder if faithfulness is worth it. Yet God's plans are often bigger than what we can see in the moment. Scripture "But the people, the men of Israel, took courage and strengthened themselves and again set their battle line in the same place where they formed it the first day." — Judges 20:22 (AMP) Explanation The tragic story of the Levite's concubine in Judges 19 led to a national crisis in Israel. When the tribe of Benjamin refused to surrender the guilty men responsible for the crime, the other tribes went to war against them in pursuit of justice. What makes this account difficult to understand is that Israel suffered devastating losses. Twice they went into battle, and twice they were defeated. ...

Think About It. Talk It Over. Do Something!

Image
Think About It. Talk It Over. Do Something! "And he ordered the men he sent out, 'Say to every man in Israel: Has such a thing as this ever happened from the time the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt until now? Think about it! Talk it over. Do something!'" (Judg. 19:30) These three simple instructions reveal a powerful process for bringing change and accomplishing worthwhile goals. First, think about it . Every meaningful achievement begins as an idea. It starts in the mind where possibilities are imagined, plans are formed, and vision takes shape. Before anything can become reality, it must first become clear in your thoughts. Next, talk it over . When an idea captures your heart, you naturally begin to discuss it. You share it with trusted people, refine it through conversation, and give it a voice. Talking about it helps transform a vague thought into a defined direction. Talking about it gives life to the idea. Finally, do something . Thi...

Cut Hair Still Grows

Image
Cut Hair Still Grows Have you ever felt like you've lost everything that made you strong? Perhaps you failed, made a costly mistake, or found yourself in a situation where it seemed all hope was gone. If so, remember this simple truth: cut hair still grows. "But the hair of his head began to grow again after it had been shaved." (Judges 16:22) Samson's downfall came when he revealed the secret of his strength. The moment his hair was cut, he lost the power God had entrusted to him and became vulnerable to his enemies. The Philistines captured him, blinded him, shackled him, and humiliated him. They thought they had seen the end of Samson. They believed his story was over. But there was one thing they failed to notice: while Samson was in prison, his hair began to grow again. That growing hair was more than a physical change; it was a sign that God was not finished with him. Through pain, humiliation, and repentance, Samson's relationship with God...

Five Consequences of Samson's Actions

Image
Five Consequences of Samson's Actions "The Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes, and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain in the prison." (Judges 16:21) Actions have consequences. Every decision we make moves us either closer to God's purpose or further away from it. Samson's downfall did not happen overnight; it was the result of a series of compromises that eventually led to the departure of God's presence from his life. In this verse, we see at least five painful consequences of his actions. First, he was seized by the enemy. Samson, once a mighty warrior, became helpless in the hands of the Philistines. Whenever we drift away from God's will, we expose ourselves to the attacks and control of the enemy. Scripture reminds us that the enemy comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. Second, his eyes were gouged out. The enemy took away his vision. A person without vision struggles t...

it's Not in the Shaking

Image
It's Not in the Shaking Have you ever mistaken the packaging for the product? In many places today, noise is often confused with power, movement with anointing, and performance with God's presence. Yet the greatest danger is not the absence of activity but the absence of God. "Then she said, 'The Philistines are on you, Samson!' He woke up, thinking, 'I'll go out, like always, and shake free.' He didn't realize that GOD had abandoned him." (Judges 16:20) Samson had become accustomed to experiencing God's power in his life. Time after time, he escaped danger through the strength God gave him. But after revealing the secret of his consecration to Delilah, he crossed a line of disobedience and compromise. When the Philistines came for him, Samson assumed he could simply repeat the motions that had worked before. He thought the power was in the shaking. What he failed to realize was that the true source of his strength had depa...

Spot The Patterns

Image
SPOT THE PATTERNS Why do some of the same problems keep showing up in our lives? Different faces. Different places. Different seasons. Yet somehow, the outcome remains the same. Many times, what we call bad luck or unfortunate circumstances are actually patterns we have failed to recognize. Samson had a pattern problem. "She kept at it day after day, nagging and tormenting him. Finally, he was fed up—he couldn't take another minute of it. He spilled it." (Judges 16:16-17) This wasn't the first time Samson had given away valuable information under pressure. Years earlier, during his wedding feast, he revealed the answer to his riddle after relentless pressure from his wife. Instead of learning from that experience, he repeated the same mistake with Delilah. The tragedy was not simply that Delilah deceived him. The tragedy was that Samson failed to recognize the pattern. Many of us do the same. We keep encountering the same frustrations, making the ...

How Can You Love What You Don't Trust

Image
How Can You Love What You Don't Trust ? Can you truly love someone you don't trust? Think about it for a moment. Can love survive where trust is absent? Or is trust one of the essential ingredients of genuine love? We've all experienced relationships where trust was broken—between friends, spouses, family members, or colleagues. Once trust begins to crack, the relationship often begins to suffer. This raises an important question: Can love and trust really be separated? "She said, 'How can you say, "I love you," when you won't even trust me? Three times now you've toyed with me, like a cat with a mouse, refusing to tell me the secret of your great strength.'" (Judg. 16:15) Delilah confronted Samson with a question that still challenges us today: "How can you say, 'I love you,' when you won't trust me?" While Delilah's motives were questionable, her question touches on a profound truth. Trust is one of the ...

Keep the Secret of Your Strength Secret

Keep the Secret of Your Strength Secret "The men were waiting in ambush in her room. Then she said, 'The Philistines are on you, Samson!' He snapped the cords as though they were mere threads. The secret of his strength was still a secret." (Judg. 16:9) A secret remains a secret because it is not known by everyone. One of the lessons from Samson's life is this: keep the secret of your strength secret. We live in a world where many people are constantly trying to gain an advantage over others. If they discover what makes you effective, what gives you influence, or where your strength lies, some may use that knowledge against you. In Samson's case, Delilah repeatedly proved that she could not be trusted. Yet, instead of guarding his secret, he eventually revealed it. There is an important lesson here. The people who are most likely to learn your secrets are those who have close access to your life. This is why you must be careful about whom you trust with y...
