When God Goes Before You
When God Goes Before You
“I sent the hornet ahead of you. It drove out the two Amorite kings—did your work for you. You didn't have to do a thing, not so much as raise a finger.” (Joshua 24:12)
Wars are often fought with every possible strategy. People deploy whatever tools, tactics, or weapons are available just to gain victory. In human conflicts, the goal is often to win by any means necessary.
In this passage, however, we see a very different kind of battle. God Himself went ahead of Israel. The Scripture says He sent the hornet before them—fierce, buzzing insects, similar to wasps but larger and more aggressive. These tiny creatures became instruments in God’s hands. Through them, God drove out Israel’s enemies so that the Israelites themselves did not have to fight.
Among those defeated were the two powerful Amorite kings, Sihon and Og. King Og of Bashan was even known as one of the last of the Rephaim—people described as giants.
“And the territory of Og king of Bashan… who was of the remnant of the giants, who dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei.” (Joshua 12:4 KJV)
These were formidable rulers, yet God overcame them using something as small as hornets. This reminds us that God does not depend on human strength or conventional weapons. He can use the smallest things to accomplish the greatest victories.
When God goes before you, obstacles that appear impossible begin to crumble. Battles you thought you had to fight alone are already being handled by Him. Our responsibility is to trust Him, even when we cannot clearly see how He is working. He has promised never to leave nor forsake us. When God goes ahead of you, victory is assured.
Reflection
Many times we exhaust ourselves trying to fight battles that God has already promised to handle. Like Israel, we often imagine that victory depends entirely on our strength, wisdom, or effort. Yet God reminds us that He can go before us and prepare the way. Sometimes the “hornets” He sends are circumstances, people, or unexpected events that quietly remove obstacles ahead of us. Our task is not always to fight harder, but to trust deeper.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for going before me in every battle of life. Help me to trust Your power more than my own strength. When I face challenges that seem too great, remind me that You are already at work ahead of me. Teach me to walk in faith, knowing that You are preparing the way and securing the victory in Jesus' name . Amen.
Have a fruitful day,
