Bad Things Happen to Good People
Bad Things Happen to Good People
“Gideon replied, ‘Pardon me, my lord, but if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all His wonders that our ancestors told us about…?’” (Judges 6:13)
When the angel of the Lord called a “mighty hero” and assured him of God’s presence, Gideon’s response was honest and human. He looked at his circumstances—fear, oppression, hiding—and found it hard to reconcile them with the idea that God was truly with him.
Many of us feel the same way. When life becomes difficult, we begin to question God’s presence. We assume that if God is with us, everything should go smoothly. But life doesn’t work that way.
If you’ve lived long enough, you know this truth: bad things do happen to good people. Consider Jesus Christ —He was criticized, misunderstood, persecuted, and ultimately crucified. Yet through it all, God was with Him. His suffering was not evidence of God’s absence, but part of a greater purpose.
So the challenges you are facing are not proof that God has abandoned you. In fact, His presence is often most real in the hardest moments. God did not promise a life free from trouble; He promised to be with us in trouble.
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)
Like Gideon, you may be asking questions: Why is this happening? Where are the miracles? Those questions are valid. But even when answers don’t come immediately, one truth remains unshaken—God is with you.
Isaiah 43:2–3 reminds us: “When you're in over your head, I'll be there with you… When you're in rough waters, you will not go down. When you're between a rock and a hard place, it won't be a dead end-- Because I am GOD, your personal God, .”
God’s presence does not always remove the storm, but it guarantees you will not face it alone.
Reflection
It’s easy to measure God’s presence by how comfortable life feels. But faith calls us to trust His presence even when life feels uncertain. Gideon thought God had abandoned Israel, yet God was already at work, preparing deliverance through him.
Sometimes, what looks like abandonment is actually preparation. What feels like silence may be God building strength within you. The question is not whether God is with you—the real question is whether you will trust Him even when it doesn’t feel like it.
Prayer
Lord, In moments when life feels overwhelming and confusing, help me to remember that You are still with me. When I cannot see Your hand, help me trust Your heart. Strengthen my faith in the middle of uncertainty, and remind me that my situation is not greater than Your presence.
Like Gideon, I may have questions, but I choose to hold on to Your promise that You will never leave me nor forsake me. Be my refuge, my strength, and my peace through every storm. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Have a fruitful day,
