Watch Your Proclivities

Watch Your Proclivities

"Three hundred lapped with their tongues from their cupped hands. All the rest knelt to drink.GOD said to Gideon: "I'll use the three hundred men who lapped at the stream to save you and give Midian into your hands. All the rest may go home." (Judg.7.6 - 7)

In life, we’re called to be both effective and efficient. To be effective is to do the right thing; to be efficient is to do things the right way. Both matter—but often, it is the how that sets people apart.

In this passage, God had already promised to refine Gideon’s army. The test at the water seemed ordinary, almost insignificant. Yet it revealed something deeper: attentiveness, discipline, and awareness. Those who scooped water into their hands remained alert; those who knelt with their faces buried in the stream lost sight of their surroundings. What looked like a simple act exposed inner habits.

This is where proclivities come in—your natural tendencies, the patterns you’ve trained yourself into over time. The small, unnoticed actions—how you carry yourself, how you speak, how you respond under pressure—are not random. They are rehearsed behaviors that eventually define you.

God is interested not only in what you do, but how you do it. Your everyday conduct becomes the platform for divine use. Carelessness in little things can cost greatly in the long run. Consider Esua, who traded his birthright for a single meal—an impulsive act rooted in unchecked appetite and poor judgment. What felt like a small decision became a lifelong loss.

So, learn to do things well. Cultivate excellence in the ordinary. Discipline your habits, refine your responses, and pay attention to the details. The way you live daily is shaping the future you will step into.

Reflection
What are the subtle habits shaping my life right now? Are they preparing me for greater responsibility, or quietly limiting me? The little things I overlook today may be the very things God is using to position me tomorrow.

Prayer
Lord, help me to be mindful of my ways. Teach me not only to do what is right but to do it well. Refine my habits, discipline my responses, and shape my character in the quiet places of life. Let my daily conduct align with Your purpose for me, and prepare me for the opportunities ahead in Jesus' name. Amen.

Have a fruitful day,
