Understand The Culture
Understand the Culture
Hook
God often works through people who understand the culture, but He is never limited by it. Wisdom is knowing the difference.
Scripture
"When you see him slipping off to sleep, watch where he lies down and then go there. Lie at his feet to let him know that you are available to him for marriage. Then wait and see what he says. He'll tell you what to do." (Ruth 3:4 MSG)
Explanation
Culture is a people's way of life. It shapes how they think, what they value, and what they consider acceptable. If you don't understand the "how," you'll often struggle to understand the "why."
Naomi understood the customs of Bethlehem because she belonged there. Ruth was a foreigner who needed someone to guide her. Naomi's instruction may seem unusual today, but within their culture, lying at Boaz's feet was a respectful way of expressing Ruth's desire for redemption and marriage.
God's plans do not always fit our expectations. Sometimes He works in ways that seem unconventional, reminding us that His purposes cannot be confined by human traditions. Naomi's final instruction is just as important: "He'll tell you what to do." Ruth didn't need to know every step before taking the first one. She simply obeyed what God had placed before her and trusted Him for the rest.
Application
Learn to understand the environment God has placed you in, but let His voice be your ultimate guide. Don't wait until every detail is clear before obeying. Take the next step in faith, trusting that God will show you what comes next.
Reflection
Am I allowing tradition or fear to keep me from obeying God? Do I trust Him to guide me one step at a time?
Prayer
Father, give me wisdom to understand the times and the people around me. Help me to trust Your leading, even when it challenges my expectations. Teach me to obey the step You've placed before me, knowing that You will guide me along the way. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Discussion Question
How has God used an unexpected or unconventional path to accomplish His purpose in your life?
