DON’T MISTAKE REPRESENTATION FOR MANIFESTATION

HOOK
Not everything that looks spiritual is the presence of God.

We can have the symbols, the atmosphere, the noise, the language and even the outward expressions of faith—and still miss God Himself. We must learn not to mistake representation for manifestation, or sensation for spirituality.

SCRIPTURE

“When the Chest of the Covenant of GOD was brought into camp, everyone gave a huge cheer. The shouts were like thunderclaps shaking the very ground.”(1 Samuel 4:5)

EXPLANATION
Israel had just been defeated by the Philistines, so they came up with what seemed like a spiritual solution: bring the Ark of the Covenant into the camp.

After all, the Ark represented the presence of God.

When it arrived, the people shouted so loudly that the ground shook. It must have felt like something powerful was about to happen.

But it didn’t.

Israel was defeated again, and this time the loss was even greater.

That day taught Israel a painful lesson: the representation of God's presence is not the same as the manifestation of God's presence.

The Ark was holy, but it was not God. The oil is a symbol, but the oil is not the anointing. Water may be used as a symbol, but water is not the Holy Spirit. A building can be called a church, but the building itself is not the presence of God.

God cannot be boxed, manipulated or told how He must manifest Himself.

And the power is not in the shouting. Jesus gave us power, not grammar.

APPLICATION
We must be careful not to substitute religious activity for a genuine relationship with God.

You can shout and still be disobedient.
You can carry the symbol and still lack the substance.
You can create an atmosphere and still not have God's approval.

Israel wanted the Ark to solve a problem that repentance should have addressed.

Sometimes what we need is not another symbol, another ceremony or another emotional experience. Sometimes what we need is to return to God.

When we live right with God, we don't have to manipulate His presence. The secret is in dwelling in the secret place of the Most High.

REFLECTION
Am I pursuing God Himself, or merely the things that represent God?

It is possible to be surrounded by spiritual symbols and still be far from God. Don't settle for the representation when God wants a relationship.

PRAYER
Lord, help me to seek You and not merely the things that represent You. Deliver me from confusing religious activity, emotion or sensation with true spirituality. Give me a heart that obeys You and dwells in Your presence. Let my life carry the substance, not just the symbol. Amen.
