God Reveals Himself Through His Word

If you want to know a person, you listen to them. You learn their words, their thoughts, their values and their heart.

The same is true of God. God reveals Himself through His Word. You cannot truly know God while neglecting the Word through which He has chosen to make Himself known.

Scripture

“The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.” (1 Samuel 3:21 NIV)

John takes this even further:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1 KJV)

Jesus said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30), and, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).

Explanation
The Word is not merely a collection of instructions from God. The Word reveals God Himself.

In John 1, we see that the Word was with God and the Word was God. Jesus, the living Word, reveals the Father to us. And in 1 Samuel 3:21, we see that God revealed Himself to Samuel through His Word.

This means the Word does more than reveal the intentions of God; it reveals the person of God.

When you encounter the Word, you are not simply gathering information about God. You are being introduced to His character, His heart, His ways and His purposes.

This is why the Psalmist prayed:

“Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” (Psalm 119:18 NLT)

He understood that reading the Word is not enough. We need the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to what God is revealing about Himself through it.

Application
If you want to know God, know His Word.

Make the Word paramount in your life. Read it. Study it. Meditate on it. Pray over it. And, like the Psalmist, ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to see what is there.

The Holy Spirit, our Teacher, reveals the Father to us through the Word.

God will not speak contrary to His Word. The spoken word must always be tested and confirmed by the written Word.

To know the Word is to know Jesus, and to know Jesus is to know the Father.

Reflection
What place does God's Word truly occupy in your life?

Are you merely reading the Bible for information, or are you allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal God Himself to you through His Word?

Sometimes, the answer we are looking for is already in the Word we have neglected to open.

Prayer
Father, open my eyes to see You in Your Word. Give me a hunger for Your Word and help me to understand Your heart, Your ways and Your purposes. Holy Spirit, teach me and reveal Jesus to me through the Scriptures. Let Your Word have the highest place in my life. Amen.
