Samuel’s Word Went Viral

Everybody wants to go viral these days.

A post gets thousands of views, a video gets shared everywhere, and suddenly everyone knows your name. But going viral is not necessarily the same as making an impact. You can be widely heard and still have nothing worthwhile to say.

Samuel was different. His word went viral, but not because he was chasing trends. His influence was the result of a life that God was shaping.

Scripture 

“Whatever Samuel said was broadcast all through Israel.” (1 Samuel 4:1) l

Explanation
If Samuel were described in today’s language, we might call him a social—and more importantly, spiritual—influencer.

The Bible says whatever Samuel said was “broadcast all through Israel.” In today’s parlance, we would say Samuel’s word went viral.

But Samuel was not trending for the sake of trending. His influence had substance.

Earlier, we are told why his words carried such weight: 

“As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him, and everything Samuel said was wise and helpful.” (1 Samuel 3:19 NLT)

There it is: God was with him, he grew, and what he said was wise and helpful.

That is a powerful combination.

There are people who are wise but use their wisdom only for themselves. There are people who are knowledgeable but their knowledge does not help anybody. Samuel was different. His wisdom was useful. What he said added value to people's lives.

And when wisdom becomes helpful, people will listen. When what you say consistently adds value, people will share it. Your voice will travel beyond your immediate circle.

Samuel didn't have to chase influence. Influence followed impact.

Application
Don't make going viral your goal; make being valuable your goal.

Grow in wisdom. Walk with God. Become genuinely helpful to people. Let your words solve problems, give direction, encourage the discouraged, correct the wrong, and point people back to God.

You don't need millions of followers to have influence. Sometimes, one wise and helpful word can travel farther than you ever imagined.

Don't chase the broadcast. Build the substance that deserves to be broadcast.

Reflection
If everything you said today was broadcast throughout your community, would people be better because they heard you?

What are you putting into your words that makes them worth sharing?

Prayer
Lord, help me to grow in wisdom and in my walk with You. Make my words wise, helpful and valuable to others. May my influence not be about attention, but about impact. Let what comes from me point people toward You and make their lives better. Amen.
