The Ways of God

“He replied, ‘Not so fast. There’s a holy man in this town. He carries a lot of weight around here. What he says is always right on the mark. Maybe he can tell us where to go.’”(1 Sam. 9:6)

God knows how to orchestrate our steps, even when we have no idea what the end game will be. This does not undermine the place of planning. Sometimes, we think things worked out because we had all our plans well marshalled, but in reality, God’s unseen hand was all the while working behind the scenes, making everything work together for our good.

After Saul and his servant had exhausted all their options in searching for the lost donkeys, Saul had given up hope. But his servant cut him off: “Not so fast.” He suggested that they go back home? No. He suggested that they go and see the prophet. This was never part of the original plan, but God was cooking something.

Now, the interesting part is that God had earlier told Samuel the prophet that He was going to send him a man—and that man was Saul. Saul did not know this. Saul’s servant did not know this. Samuel did not know who the man God was going to send would be. The only One who knew how all the pieces would fit together was God.

So, He worked the back channels and brought everyone involved together.

“This time tomorrow, I’m sending a man from the land of Benjamin to meet you. You’re to anoint him as prince over my people Israel. He will free my people from Philistine oppression. Yes, I know all about their hard circumstances. I’ve heard their cries for help.”(1 Sam. 9:16)

Your ability to trust that God is working all things in your favour is one thing you don’t want to give up. Trust that God loves you enough that, even in the crisis, He is working an angle that has not even crossed your mind.

The ways of God are not our ways.

Trust Him. Align with Him. Imbibe His ways, and let them become your reality.

Reflection
What if the situation you are struggling to understand right now is part of a bigger picture God is putting together?

Prayer
Father, help me trust You when I cannot see what You are doing. Teach me to recognise Your leading and align myself with Your ways. Amen.

Can you remember a time when you later realised that God had been working behind the scenes in a situation you did not understand at the time?

With Such an Attitude “She said, ‘Of course I’ll go with you. But understand that with an attitude like that, there will be no glory for you. The LORD will hand Sisera over to a woman.’ So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh.” (Judges 4:9) It is often said that attitude is everything—and in this passage, that truth is unmistakable.
