Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say
Your words are a mirror of your heart. If your heart is crooked, your words will eventually expose it.
Scripture
“Israel's God-of-Glory doesn't deceive and he doesn't dither. He says what he means and means what he says.” (1 Samuel 15:29 MSG)
Explanation
One mark of a person of integrity is the ability to say what they mean and mean what they say. God demonstrates this perfectly. He does not lie, deceive, or make empty promises. His words reflect His nature.
Our words reveal who we really are. Jesus said that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). In other words, our words are the overflow of our inner lives. Our thoughts influence our words, and our words influence our actions and relationships.
That is why Solomon gives us this instruction:
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”(Proverbs 4:23 KJV)
The heart is the breeding ground of our words. What we repeatedly entertain in our minds eventually finds expression through our mouths. If we want our words to be clean, truthful, and constructive, we must first learn to discipline our thoughts.
Clean thoughts produce clean words, and consistent, truthful words build a life of integrity.
Application
Make your words count. Before you speak, ask yourself whether what you are about to say is true, necessary, and consistent with who you claim to be.
* When you make a promise, keep it. If circumstances change, communicate honestly rather than leaving people disappointed.
* When you commit to a task, follow through. Don't say yes simply to please someone when you have no intention of doing it.
* When you speak about others, choose your words carefully. Refuse to entertain malicious thoughts that eventually become gossip, slander, or hurtful remarks.
* When you are angry, discipline your thoughts before opening your mouth. Don't allow a temporary emotion to produce words that cause lasting damage.
Remember, saying what you mean does not mean speaking carelessly or harshly. It means speaking truthfully, thoughtfully, and with integrity.
Start by paying attention to what occupies your heart. Feed your mind with what is true, pure, and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8). When your thoughts are right, your words are more likely to reflect the person you are becoming.
If you mean it, say it. If you say it, stand by it. Let your words be worthy of your character.
Reflection
Do my words reflect the truth in my heart, or do I say things merely to impress people, escape responsibility, or gain approval?
Prayer
Father, help me guard my heart and discipline my thoughts. Let my words be truthful, gracious, and consistent with my character. Give me the courage to mean what I say and the integrity to stand by my commitments. May my words bring life, build trust, and glorify You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Discussion Question
Have you ever lost someone's trust because your words did not match your actions? What practical steps can you take to become a person whose words can be trusted?
Have a fruitful day.
