Don't curse the darkness

Don't curse the darkness

"He and Aaron rounded up the whole congregation in front of the rock. Moses spoke: "Listen, rebels! Do we have to bring water out of this rock for you?" With that Moses raised his arm and slammed his staff against the rock--once, twice. Water poured out. Congregation and cattle drank."(Num.20.10 - 11)

It is said that it take nothing for one candle to light another one. This could be said of humans as well. It is helpful to help others instead of just criticising.

Moses had come from the presence of God where he has been instructed to speak to the rock to provide water for the children of Israel. He takes the rod as instructed from the presence of God, calls the people together and spoke fron the place of anger.

"Listen, rebels! Do we have to bring water out of this rock for you?", he asked. But God has already asked him do that. And it was this attitude that got Moses in trouble with God. That was what made him miss the promised land. And by the way, it was not Moses only but with Aaron also.

Moses could have helped them since he thinks they could have done better. We must learn to light a candle and not just curse the darkness. Sometimes, we do nothing or not enough but just criticise when we could have gone a step further and do better by lighting a candle.

One reason you want to light a candle instead of cursing the darkness is that their darkness, if care is not taken, will affect you. Take Moses' case for instance, he did not cry or complained to God about not having water but their complain made him so angry he acted out of character. And he missed the promised land as a result.

Find someone around you, in fact, catch someone around you can be of help to. Don't wait for them to approach you, you go and offer the help you know they need. If we light enough candles, sooner than later, there will be no darkness to curse.

Light a candle...
