Keep the blessings in the family 

"Then tell the People of Israel, If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. If he has no daughter, give it to his brothers. If he has no brothers, give it to his father's brothers. If his father had no brothers, give it to the nearest relative so that the inheritance stays in the family. This is the standard procedure for the People of Israel, as commanded by GOD through Moses."(Num.27.8 - 11)

The Jews are said to have a tradition where money stays within the Jewish community for up to seven times. That is, if a Jew provides goods, they will rather patriotise themselves than take the money out side. 

It paints a picture of what we see in our text. It says if a father dies without a son, the inheritance should be given to his daughters; if he has no daughter, it should be given to the father's brother. If the father has no brother, it will pass to the nearest relative, so long as the inheritance stays in the family. 

Family is God's idea. There are many things we can choose in this world, but family members are not one of them. You can choose a friend, but not who will be your brother or sister, uncle or aunt, cousin or nephew, mother or father. And the father that God has chosen to pass on the inheritance. 

Keep it in the family. Family is a support system; everyone comes from a family. Once we get the family structure right, we will get society right. Little wonder the devil is out to get the family. There are family structures on different levels: the nuclear, the extended, the community, the society, and the world at large. But God is asking you to get the nuclear right, and so also goes the rest. So keep it in the family. 

"God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy. But for rebels, there is only famine and distress. (Ps.68.6 NLT)

Birth rights for sale  "One day Jacob was cooking a stew. Esau came in from the field, starved. Esau said to Jacob, "Give me some of that red stew--I'm starved!" That's how he came to be called Edom (Red). Jacob said, "Make me a trade: my stew for your rights as the firstborn." Esau said, "I'm starving! What good is a birthright if I'm dead?" Jacob said, "First, swear to me." And he did it. On oath Esau traded away his rights as the firstborn." (Gen.25.29-33).  Life has taught us to trade what we have for what we want or need. And this is basic economics but the story of how Esau lost his birthright is a lesson we should not forget in a hurry.
