Don’t Push God to the Wall

"Don't push GOD, your God, to the wall as you did that day at Massah, the Testing-Place." — Deuteronomy 6:16

How can mortal men push the immortal God to the wall? How can the all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-wise God be brought to such a place? Yet, this is exactly what the children of Israel did at Massah.

Moses reminded them of that moment when they tested God. “Is the Lord among us or not?” they asked (Exodus 17:7). That question revealed their doubt and disbelief. In truth, to push God to the wall is to disbelieve Him—to question His presence, His power, or His promises.

Faith is the foundation of our relationship with God. The writer of Hebrews makes this clear:
"But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him." — Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

When we doubt God, we displease Him. When we question His presence, we push Him to the wall. Israel’s unbelief at Massah led to rebellion, and that rebellion cost them the Promised Land. All who were twenty years and above perished in the wilderness because they would not believe.

The same danger faces us today. When we hear the Word of God but fail to mix it with faith, it bears no fruit in our lives:
"For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it." — Hebrews 4:2 (KJV)

Reflection:
Have you ever doubted God’s presence in your life—when things seemed hard or prayers delayed? Remember, disbelief distances us from God, but faith draws us near.

Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for the times I have doubted Your presence or promises. Help me to trust You completely, even when I cannot see the way ahead. Strengthen my faith so that I never push You to the wall again. Amen.

Birth rights for sale  "One day Jacob was cooking a stew. Esau came in from the field, starved. Esau said to Jacob, "Give me some of that red stew--I'm starved!" That's how he came to be called Edom (Red). Jacob said, "Make me a trade: my stew for your rights as the firstborn." Esau said, "I'm starving! What good is a birthright if I'm dead?"
