The “Anyhowness” of a People
The “Anyhowness” of a People
"He said, “From now on I’m looking the other way. Watch what happens to them. What a twisted, upside-down generation—unpredictable, unstable, and reckless from one moment to the next.” (Deuteronomy 32:20)
Imagine a life lived without God’s involvement. It would be like wearing one’s clothes inside-out and upside-down—nothing fits, nothing aligns, and nothing makes sense. This is the picture Scripture paints of a people who have pushed God aside: a turned-around, upside-down existence marked by confusion and instability.
The words “I’m looking the other way” are sobering. We never want God to withdraw His gaze from our lives. In the realm of the spirit, there is no vacuum—when God is ignored, the enemy is quick to intrude. That is why a society begins to decay when abnormalities are celebrated as normal, truth is branded a lie, and justice and equity are trampled underfoot. These are clear signs that something is deeply wrong.
Our text reveals the “anyhowness” of a people whose lives are devoid of God. Where God’s presence is absent, disorder reigns. But where God is welcomed, order is restored. Scripture reminds us that “God is not the author of confusion, but of peace” (1 Corinthians 14:33). His presence brings alignment, stability, and clarity.
When we allow God to have His way, order follows. Peace settles in, joy overflows, love permeates the atmosphere, and purpose is restored. The call is simple yet profound: let God lead, and may we find the grace and strength to follow.
Brief Reflection
Take a moment to examine your life and your community. Are there areas where confusion has replaced order, or compromise has displaced truth? These may be signals that God’s guidance has been sidelined. Returning to God restores clarity, peace, and direction.
Prayer
Lord God, we acknowledge that without You, our lives descend into confusion and disorder. We ask that You never look away from us. Search our hearts and expose every area where we have pushed You aside. Restore Your order, peace, and truth in our lives, our families, and our land. Lead us in Your ways, and give us the grace to follow You wholeheartedly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Have a fruitful day,
