Stand Till It Is Done
Stand Till It Is Done“
The priests carrying the Chest stood firm in the middle of the Jordan until everything GOD had commanded Joshua to tell the people was completed, just as Moses had instructed Joshua. The people crossed over, without delay.” (Joshua 4:10)
As I read through the Old Testament, I often look for its New Testament counterpart and the lessons it offers for believers today. In this passage, we see Joshua and the Levitical priests holding their ground in the middle of the Jordan. They did not step out prematurely; they stood until everything God commanded was fully accomplished.
This brings fresh meaning to Paul’s exhortation in Ephesians 6:“
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore…” (Ephesians 6:13–14)
Israel had been instructed to follow the Ark of the Covenant, and the priests carrying it were told to step into the Jordan. When they obeyed, the waters receded, and the people crossed on dry ground. Yet the miracle was sustained only as long as the priests continued to stand. Their standing held back the waters until the entire congregation had crossed and every word God spoke was fulfilled.
In the same way, believers are called to stand for the purposes of God in their lives. We must stand for holiness, stand for peace, stand for justice and equity, and stand for the will of God. Jesus taught us to pray, “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven”—that is the ground on which we stand.
The apostle Peter also reminds us that standing requires resistance and steadfast faith:“
Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”(1 Peter 5:9, KJV)
When we stand firm in faith, we see God’s will fully accomplished in our lives.
Reflection
Standing is not a one-time action; it is a posture of obedience and endurance. Many miracles are sustained, not just started, by our willingness to stand until God’s work is complete. When the pressure to step aside comes, faith calls us to remain firm.
Prayer
Lord, give me the grace to stand firm in obedience until Your will is fully accomplished in my life. Help me not to grow weary or step back too soon. Clothe me with Your armour, strengthen my faith, and enable me to stand for righteousness, truth, and Your purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Have a fruitful day,
