They Heard the News
They Heard the News
"All the kings west of the Jordan—those in the hills, the foothills, and along the Mediterranean coast toward Lebanon: the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, Girgashites, and Jebusites—heard the news. They came together and formed a coalition to fight against Joshua and Israel." (Joshua 9:1–2)
The mighty acts of God through Joshua and the children of Israel did not remain hidden. Their victories echoed across the land, and the news spread far and wide. But news, especially good news, never produces the same reaction in everyone. While some rejoice and others remain indifferent, there are those whose hearts are stirred with envy and fear.
In our text, the kings of the surrounding nations heard what God was doing for Israel, and instead of humbling themselves, they allowed jealousy to drive them into unity against God’s people. They laid aside their differences and formed a coalition, not to celebrate, but to fight.
This reminds us that not everyone will be glad when God begins to lift you. Some will clap for you, some will watch without concern, and others will secretly—or openly—oppose you. That is why wisdom is needed in sharing good news, and discernment is needed in choosing confidants.
Yet, no matter the alliances formed against you, God’s purpose cannot be stopped. Your blessings carry your name and address. Just as the oil in Samuel’s horn could not flow until it rested on David’s head, what God has ordained for you cannot be diverted to another. Even if influential people rise against you, what God has blessed cannot be cursed.
Brief Reflection
Opposition is often proof that progress is happening. When God’s hand is evident in your life, resistance may arise—but resistance does not mean defeat. Trust God’s sovereignty above human coalitions.
PrayerL
Lord, thank You for the good work You are doing in my life. Give me wisdom to walk circumspectly and grace to trust You when opposition arises. Let every plan formed against Your purpose for my life fail, and let Your blessing speak louder than the voices of envy. In Jesus’ name, Amen..
Have a fruitful day,
