Take Possession
Take Possession
"And so GOD gave Israel the entire land that He had solemnly vowed to give to their ancestors. They took possession of it and made themselves at home in it.” (Joshua 21:43)
God is a promise-keeping God. When He speaks, He is not merely predicting what will happen; He is revealing what has already been settled in eternity, even though we may not yet have entered into it in time. If we live long enough in faith and obedience, we will experience everything God has promised.
This truth is clearly seen in the story of Israel. More than five hundred years earlier, God promised Abraham that his descendants would inherit a land flowing with milk and honey. Abraham believed God, though he did not possess the land in his lifetime. Yet, in our text, we see that God fulfilled that ancient promise completely. Israel did not receive part of the land or a portion of the promise—God gave them the entire land He had sworn to their ancestors.
However, God’s faithfulness did not end with giving; Israel still had a responsibility. The Scripture says they took possession of the land and made themselves at home in it. This teaches us that divine promises must be claimed. God may promise sound health, but we must refuse to live under fear or defeat. God may promise prosperity, but we must not settle for lack when abundance has been given. Receiving God’s promise requires faith, obedience, and bold possession.
Making themselves at home means Israel did not live as strangers in what God had given them. They settled in, rested, and enjoyed the fulfillment of God’s word. In the same way, God’s promises are not temporary or experimental; they are permanent realities meant to be lived in and enjoyed.
Reflection
God’s promises are already settled, but they must be possessed. Do not admire what God has promised from a distance—step into it, claim it, and make yourself at home in what He has given you.
Prayer
Father, I thank You because You are faithful to every word You have spoken. Help me to walk in faith, to take possession of Your promises, and to live confidently in all You have prepared for me. I refuse to settle for less than Your will for my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Have a fruitful day
