Another Generation

Another Generation

“And also all that generation were gathered to their fathers, and there arose another generation after them who did not know (recognize, understand) the Lord, or even the work which He had done for Israel.” (Judg. 2:10 AMP)

God is a generational God. That is why He is called our Father—not our grandfather or great-grandfather—even though He was the Father of our parents and grandparents. This shows that God desires a personal relationship with every generation. He is relational, and that relationship is built through fellowship.

The day we begin to relate with God only as the God of our fathers, we have missed the point. He must be our God too. That is why the Bible says He is the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Each generation knew Him personally. They may have first known Him as the God of their fathers, but they grew to recognize Him, understand Him, and walk with Him for themselves.

Our text tells us that after Joshua and the elders died, another generation arose that did not know, recognize, or understand God, nor the works He had done for Israel. This was a great tragedy. It was not only a leadership failure but also a parental failure. If God is going to remain generational in our lives—being our God and the God of our children—then we must intentionally pass on the knowledge of God to the next generation. The scripture says they did not know God, nor the works He had done for them.

The next verse shows the consequence: they did evil in the sight of the Lord and served other gods. When a generation does not know God, they will inevitably serve something else.

Moses already gave the solution in Deuteronomy 6:5–9: love God with all your heart, teach His Word to your children, talk about Him at home and outside, and keep His Word constantly before them. This is how God becomes not only your God, but also the God of your children.

Reflection
Christianity is only one generation away from extinction if one generation fails to teach the next. Knowing God is not hereditary; it is taught, modeled, and experienced. Children must not only hear about God, they must see Him in the lives of their parents. If we want another generation that knows God, we must intentionally teach, live, and demonstrate our walk with Him daily.

Prayer
Lord, help me to know You personally and deeply, not just as the God of others but as my Father. Help me to pass the knowledge of You to the next generation through my words, my life, and my example. Let my children and those around me know You for themselves and walk in Your ways. May there never arise a generation after me that does not know You in Jesus' name. Amen.

Have a fruitful day,
