Failure Is 50/50 — So Is Success
Failure Is 50/50 — So Is Success
"But Zebulun risked life and limb, defied death, as did Naphtali on the battle heights." (Judg. 5:18)
When we read the verses before this text, we see examples of attitudes we should avoid. The Bible describes them vividly:
"Why all those campfire discussions? Diverted and distracted, Reuben's divisions couldn't make up their minds. Gilead played it safe across the Jordan, and Dan, why did he go off sailing? Asher kept his distance on the seacoast, safe and secure in his harbors." (Judg. 5:16–17)
Several tribes were mentioned and their responses to the call for battle were recorded.
Reuben was plagued by indecision.
Gilead (Manasseh) felt safe across the Jordan. Dan ran away from the problem.
Asher was too afraid to confront the enemy and kept a safe distance.
But Zebulun was different. Naphtali was different. They risked their lives, defied death, and stepped into the battle. They took the bull by the horns and staked their lives for a cause bigger than themselves.
Perhaps the reason the others hesitated was because the battle carried a risk — failure was a 50/50 chance. But what they forgot was that success was also a 50/50 chance. The same probability that you may fail is the same probability that you may succeed. Many people focus so much on the possibility of failure that they forfeit their chance of success.
So the question is: Which side of the 50/50 divide will you stand on — the side of fear or the side of faith?
Reflection:
Life often presents us with moments where we must choose between safety and purpose, between comfort and courage. Those who make a difference are not those who had guaranteed success, but those who were willing to try despite the possibility of failure. Courage is not the absence of risk; it is the decision that something is more important than safety. If we never step forward because we might fail, we will also never step forward to succeed.
Prayer:
Lord, give me the courage to step forward even when I am unsure of the outcome. Help me not to be paralyzed by fear or indecision. Teach me to trust You enough to take bold steps when necessary. May I not sit back in comfort when I should step forward in faith. Strengthen my heart to face challenges and help me remember that with You, no effort is ever wasted in Jesus' name. Amen.
Have a fruitful day,
