But the Israelites Strategized
But the Israelites Strategized
Have you ever wondered why some people keep trying harder but never seem to get different results? Sometimes the problem is not a lack of effort, prayer, or faith—it is a lack of strategy.
Scripture
"But the Israelites strategized: 'Now let's retreat and pull them out of the city onto the main roads.' So every Israelite moved farther out to Baal Tamar; at the same time the Israelite ambush rushed from its place west of Gibeah." (Judges 20:33)
Explanation
There is a popular saying: "A place for everything and everything in its place." Success often requires more than desire; it requires planning and strategy.
Strategy is choosing the best course of action from several available options. It involves thinking, evaluating, and intentionally positioning yourself for victory.
The Israelites learned this lesson the hard way. Following the horrific murder of the Levite's concubine, they went to war against the tribe of Benjamin. Although their cause was just and they sought God's direction, they suffered painful defeats. They had zeal, but they lacked strategy.
Eventually, they changed their approach. Instead of charging into battle the same way, they developed a deliberate plan. They set an ambush, drew their enemies out, and coordinated their movements. Once strategy was added to their faith and obedience, victory followed.
God expects us to use the minds He has given us. Faith is not a substitute for wisdom. While God provides guidance, strength, and favor, He also expects us to think, plan, and act responsibly. God will do what only He can do, but we must do what He has equipped us to do.
Application
Perhaps you have been praying about a situation for a long time but seeing little progress. Before assuming God has not answered, ask yourself: What is my strategy?
If you are trusting God for financial growth, what is your financial strategy? If you desire ministry impact, what is your ministry strategy? If you want academic or career success, what is your plan for achieving it?
Prayer opens doors, but strategy helps you walk through them. Ask God for wisdom, then put that wisdom into action. Sometimes the difference between defeat and victory is not more effort—it is a better strategy.
Reflection
Where in your life have you been relying solely on effort while neglecting strategy? What practical step can you take today to align your actions with the wisdom God has given you?
Prayer
Father, thank You for giving me not only faith but also wisdom and understanding. Help me to think clearly, plan wisely, and act strategically. Show me the steps I need to take and grant me the discipline to follow through. May I combine trust in You with responsible action, so that I can experience the victories You have prepared for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Discussion Question
