Fix Your Focus
Fix Your Focus
Hook
What you focus on determines how you feel, how you respond, and ultimately where you are headed. The same situation can either become a reason for despair or an opportunity for hope, depending on the perspective through which you view it. Sometimes God is already working, but our eyes are fixed on what we have lost rather than on what He is providing.
Scripture
"And so Naomi returned from Moab, accompanied by her daughter-in-law Ruth the Moabite, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning." (Ruth 1:J22)
Explanation
Perspective matters. The way we interpret the events of our lives often determines whether we walk in bitterness or in hope.
Naomi left Bethlehem because of a famine. Her decision seemed logical at the time, but it was based more on what she could see than on what God might be doing. In Moab, she lost her husband and her sons, and when she finally returned home, she concluded that God had ruined her life. She even asked to be called Mara—meaning "bitter"—instead of Naomi, which means "pleasant."
Yet Naomi failed to recognize something remarkable. God had brought her back home. He had preserved her life. He had given her the companionship of Ruth. And they arrived in Bethlehem at the very beginning of the barley harvest—a season of new provision and fresh possibilities.
While Naomi focused on her losses, God was already preparing her harvest.
Many times, we do the same. We become so consumed with what isn't working that we miss what God is doing right before our eyes. God's perspective sees possibilities where we see problems and hope where we see disappointment.
Application
Perhaps you have been dwelling on unanswered prayers, disappointments, or past mistakes. Today, choose to shift your focus. Instead of magnifying what is missing, begin to thank God for what remains. Gratitude creates joy, and joy strengthens us for the next phase of God's purpose.
Don't allow your losses to blind you to your harvest. Learn to see life through God's eyes. Fix your focus.
Reflection
Am I so focused on what I have lost that I am missing what God is providing? What blessings, opportunities, or relationships have I overlooked because my attention has been fixed on my disappointments?
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I have focused more on my losses than on Your faithfulness. Open my eyes to see life from Your perspective. Teach me to be grateful for Your daily mercies and to recognize the harvest You have prepared for me. Fill my heart with joy and hope, and help me to trust that You are working even when I cannot see it. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Discussion Question
What disappointment or loss have you been focusing on, and how might your outlook change if you intentionally looked at it from God's perspective and thanked Him for what He is already doing?
