kissers and Cleavers
Kissers and Cleavers
Hook
Have you noticed that some people leave when the road gets difficult, while others stay even when they have every reason to walk away? Life has a way of revealing who is merely attached to us and who is genuinely committed to our journey.
Scripture
"Again they wept aloud. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her." (Ruth 1:14)
Explanation
Naomi, Ruth, and Orpah were traveling together toward Israel after experiencing deep personal loss. Along the way, Naomi encouraged her daughters-in-law to return to their families and pursue a future that seemed more promising. She wasn't being selfish; she was being thoughtful and considerate of their welfare.
Faced with this life-changing decision, Orpah eventually accepted Naomi's advice. She kissed her goodbye and returned home. There was nothing wrong with her decision. It simply meant her path was different from Naomi's.
Ruth, however, made a different choice. She refused to leave. She held on to Naomi, choosing loyalty over convenience and commitment over comfort. Her decision would eventually place her in the lineage of Jesus Christ.
The contrast between these two women teaches us an important lesson: there are "kissers" and there are "cleavers." Kissers care for us for a season but eventually move on. Cleavers remain connected to God's purpose for our lives and stay faithful even when circumstances make leaving easier.
Application
Don't become bitter when people leave. Not everyone is meant to travel every stage of your journey with you. Release those whose season in your life has ended with grace and gratitude.
At the same time, recognize and value the Ruths God has placed around you. These are the people who stand by you during difficult seasons, encourage you when you're discouraged, and remain loyal when others walk away. Cherish them, appreciate them, and never take them for granted.
Also ask yourself: Am I a kisser or a cleaver? Do I abandon relationships when things become inconvenient, or do I remain faithful to the people God has connected to my destiny?
Reflection
People will come and go throughout life, and that's part of God's design. The challenge is not to cling to those who are leaving but to recognize, honor, and nurture the relationships God has ordained to remain. Destiny often advances through faithful relationships.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the people You have placed in my life. Give me wisdom to release those whose season has ended and grace to cherish those You have called to walk with me. Help me to be a loyal, faithful, and dependable person who strengthens others on their journey. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Discussion Question
Who are the "Ruths" in your life right now, and what practical step can you take this week to show appreciation for their loyalty and support?
Have a fruitful day,
