When Serving God Seems Like A Loss
When Serving God Seems Like a Loss
Have you ever obeyed God and felt like it was costing you more than it was benefiting you? Have you ever done the right thing, only to watch those doing wrong appear to prosper? In moments like these, it's easy to wonder if faithfulness is worth it. Yet God's plans are often bigger than what we can see in the moment.
Scripture
"But the people, the men of Israel, took courage and strengthened themselves and again set their battle line in the same place where they formed it the first day." — Judges 20:22 (AMP)
Explanation
The tragic story of the Levite's concubine in Judges 19 led to a national crisis in Israel. When the tribe of Benjamin refused to surrender the guilty men responsible for the crime, the other tribes went to war against them in pursuit of justice.
What makes this account difficult to understand is that Israel suffered devastating losses. Twice they went into battle, and twice they were defeated. Thousands of their soldiers died. To anyone watching, it seemed as though God was not on their side. It even appeared as if those defending evil were winning.
Yet after mourning, fasting, and seeking God, the Israelites found the courage to return to the battlefield. They strengthened themselves and stood again where they had stood before. Their temporary defeat did not mean God had abandoned them. He was working out a larger purpose that they could not yet see.
Eventually, victory came. The tribe of Benjamin was defeated, and justice was upheld. What looked like loss was actually part of God's greater plan.
Application
There will be seasons when obedience feels costly. You may choose integrity and lose an opportunity. You may choose righteousness and face opposition. You may remain faithful while others seem to advance through compromise.
In those moments, don't judge God's faithfulness by your immediate circumstances. Temporary setbacks are not proof that God has forgotten you. Sometimes God is accomplishing something far bigger than your comfort, success, or understanding.
The question is not whether serving God will always be convenient—it won't be. The question is whether you will continue to trust Him when obedience appears to bring loss rather than gain.
Keep standing where God placed you. Keep doing what He has told you to do. His perspective is greater than yours, and His timing is perfect.
Reflection
When was the last time you were tempted to give up because obedience seemed unrewarded? Could it be that God is accomplishing something beyond what you can presently see? Faith is often proven not when everything is going well, but when we continue to obey despite disappointment and delay.
Prayer
Father, help me to trust You when obedience is difficult and when faithfulness seems unrewarded. Give me courage to stand firm even when I do not understand what You are doing. Strengthen my heart when I face setbacks, and help me remember that Your plans are always greater than my perspective. Teach me to follow You faithfully, knowing that You are working all things according to Your perfect purpose. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Discussion Question
Can you think of a time when doing the right thing seemed to put you at a disadvantage? How did God eventually use that situation for good, or what did He teach you through it?
