Kinsman Redeemer
Kinsman Redeemer
Hook
Every one of us needs a rescuer. But not just anyone can redeem us. The Redeemer must be qualified, willing, and able.
Scripture
"And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I." (Ruth 3:12 KJV)
Explanation
The story of Boaz and Ruth points to God's greater plan of redemption. In Israel, a kinsman-redeemer had to be a close relative with both the right and the ability to redeem a family member.
After humanity's fall, mankind needed such a Redeemer—One who was truly related to us. This is why the Son of God became the Son of Man. Jesus took on human flesh so He could become our Kinsman and redeem us, making it possible for the sons of men to become the sons of God.
Boaz told Ruth there was a nearer kinsman. That nearer kinsman, often seen as a picture of Adam and humanity's natural condition, had the legal position but lacked the ability to redeem. He eventually confessed, "I cannot redeem it" (Ruth 4:6).
Boaz, however, was both willing and able. In the same way, Jesus is the only One fully qualified to redeem us. What no one else could do, Christ accomplished through His death and resurrection.
Application
Many people still cling to "nearer kinsmen"—their own efforts, religion, good works, wealth, influence, or morality—hoping these things can save them. But they all reach the same conclusion: "I cannot redeem it."
Only Jesus can redeem, restore, and give eternal life.
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." — Romans 10:13 (KJV)
All you have to do is call on Him in faith.
Reflection
What are you trusting for your salvation and security? Have you placed your confidence in Christ alone, or are you still holding on to a "nearer kinsman" that cannot save?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for becoming my Kinsman Redeemer. Thank You for doing what no one else could do. I place my trust in You alone. Redeem every area of my life and help me live as Your child in Jesus' name.. Amen.
Discussion Question
What "nearer kinsman" do people commonly rely on instead of Christ, and how does the story of Boaz help us understand Jesus' work as our perfect Redeemer?
