Blind and Asleep
Blind and Asleep
Hook
One of the greatest tragedies in life is not physical blindness—it is living without spiritual sight while drifting through life asleep. A person who is blind cannot see where they are going. A person who is asleep is unaware of what is happening around them. When both happen together, danger is inevitable.
Scripture
"One night Eli, who was almost blind by now, had just gone to bed." — 1 Samuel 3:2 (NLT)
Explanation
Eli's condition was more than a description of old age. It paints a sobering picture of Israel's spiritual state. Their leader was blind and asleep just when God was about to speak. A nation is in trouble when its leaders can neither see God's direction nor stay awake to His voice.
Sadly, many people today are in the same condition. Some are spiritually asleep—comfortable, complacent, and slow to respond to God. Others are spiritually blind—unable to discern His will because they have neglected the qualities that produce spiritual maturity.
Paul gives hope to those who are asleep: "Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light" (Ephesians 5:14). Peter explains why some remain blind: they have failed to grow in virtues such as knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love (2 Peter 1:5–9). Without these, spiritual vision becomes blurred until we forget the grace that transformed us.
Eli and his sons were a painful example of this. They refused to grow in godliness, and their blindness led to destruction.
Application
God is calling us to wake up and walk in His light. Spiritual alertness comes through responding to His voice, while spiritual sight grows as we intentionally develop Christlike character. Don't settle for merely attending church while remaining asleep to God's purpose. Wake up, pursue spiritual growth, and keep your eyes fixed on Him.
Reflection
Am I awake to God's voice, or have I become spiritually drowsy? Am I growing in the virtues that sharpen my spiritual vision, or am I gradually becoming blind to what God is doing?
Prayer
Father, awaken every part of my life that has become spiritually asleep. Open my eyes to see Your truth, and help me grow in the character that reflects Christ. May I never lose sight of the grace that saved me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Discussion Question
Which is the greater challenge in your life right now—spiritual sleep or spiritual blindness? What practical step can you take today to become more spiritually alert and discerning?
Have a fruitful day.
