A Better Man Than You Are
A Better Man Than You Are
What if God Himself told you that someone else is a better man than you?
Not your boss. Not your colleague. Not your competitor. God.
That would be a difficult verdict to swallow. We can argue with people, defend our choices and explain our shortcomings. But when God says, “He is a better man than you are,” there is nowhere left to hide.
The real question, then, is not “Am I better than him?”
It is: “Am I becoming the kind of man God calls better?”
Scripture
“Samuel said, ‘GOD has just now torn the kingdom from you, and handed it over to your neighbor, a better man than you are.’” (1 Samuel 15:28)
Explanation
God had rejected Saul as king. And He did not merely tell Saul that the kingdom would be taken from him; He told him why another would receive it—a man who was better than him.
But what does “better” really mean?
Is it intelligence? Achievement? Influence? Leadership ability? The capacity to win battles? The ability to relate well with people?
Jesus challenged our idea of goodness when He said, “No one is good—except God alone” (Mark 10:18).
So God's standard of a better man cannot simply be outward success. It begins with the heart, character and willingness to obey God.
Application
You need your own picture of what a “better man” looks like.
Perhaps he is more disciplined, more faithful, more courageous, more compassionate, more dependable, more teachable or more obedient to God.
Whatever that picture looks like, don't merely admire it—become it.
And don't allow your definition of a better man to be determined by society, applause or comparison with others.
Ask God:
“What kind of man do You want me to become?”
Then work on becoming that man.
Because the goal is not simply to be better than someone else. The goal is to become the man God considers better.
Reflection
If God were to describe the kind of man you are becoming, what would He say?
Are you becoming a better man in God's eyes—or merely becoming better at looking good in the eyes of people?
Prayer
Lord, show me the kind of man You want me to become. Give me the humility to accept correction, the courage to confront my weaknesses and the discipline to grow in character. Help me become better—not merely in the eyes of people, but according to Your standard. Amen.
Discussion Question
What qualities would you expect to find in a man whom God would call “a better man”? Which of those qualities do you need to develop more in your own life?
Have a fruitful day.
