A Jealous Eye

A Jealous Eye

Jealousy becomes dangerous when you stop noticing what you have because you cannot stop watching what someone else has.

Scripture
“So from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David.” — 1 Samuel 18:9 (NLT)

Explanation
It is one thing to feel jealous; it is another to keep a jealous eye on someone. The first may be a passing feeling, but the second is a decision to keep feeding that feeling until it begins to control your actions.

That was Saul’s problem. After hearing the women celebrate David’s greater victories, Saul became obsessed with him. His jealousy soon turned into an attempt to kill David.

“The next day an ugly mood was sent by God to afflict Saul, who became quite beside himself, raving. David played his harp, as he usually did at such times. Saul had a spear in his hand. Suddenly Saul threw the spear, thinking, ‘I’ll nail David to the wall.’ David ducked, and the spear missed. This happened twice.” (1 Samuel 18:10–11, MSG)

Saul allowed jealousy to grow until it consumed his peace, clouded his judgment, and drove his actions. Instead of concentrating on his own responsibilities, he became preoccupied with bringing David down. When jealousy takes the driver's seat, you can lose sight of your own destination.

Application
Never allow another person's success to make you feel like a failure. Someone else's promotion does not cancel your purpose, and another person's recognition does not diminish your value.

When you find yourself comparing your achievements with someone else's, pause and examine your heart. Celebrate their progress, learn what you can, and keep working on what God has entrusted to you.

Your security must come from knowing who you are in Christ, not from being ahead of everyone else. The more secure you are in Him, the less threatened you will be by the success of others.

Reflection
Am I celebrating other people's success, or secretly resenting it? Am I focused on fulfilling my purpose or keeping a jealous eye on someone else's progress?

Prayer
Father, help me guard my heart against jealousy. Teach me to celebrate others sincerely and remain secure in who I am in Christ. Help me focus on my purpose rather than competing with others. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Discussion Question
How can knowing your identity in Christ help you overcome jealousy when someone else receives the recognition, promotion, or success you desire?

Have a fruitful day.
