May Someone Speak Up for You

Your gift may open a door, but someone may need to speak up for you to walk through it.

Scripture
"One of the young men spoke up, 'I know someone. I've seen him myself: the son of Jesse of Bethlehem, an excellent musician. He's also courageous, of age, well-spoken, and good-looking. And GOD is with him.'" (1 Samuel 16:18, MSG)

Explanation
David had been anointed king, but he still needed someone to recommend him to King Saul. Fortunately, a young man who knew David spoke up for him and presented him as someone qualified for the assignment.

Joseph had the gift of interpreting dreams, but he also needed the chief cupbearer to remember him and recommend him to Pharaoh (Genesis 41:9–14).

Sometimes, your gift gets you ready for an opportunity, but someone else's recommendation helps you get the opportunity.

Notice that David was not recommended merely because he was anointed. He was an excellent musician, courageous, well-spoken, mature, and good-looking. His qualities made him a credible recommendation.

The good news is that many of these qualities can be developed. You can improve your skills, build courage, communicate better, and grow in maturity.

Application
Do not just pray for someone to speak up for you; give them something worth speaking about!

Are you excellent at what you do? Can people confidently recommend you without worrying about your competence or character?

Identify areas where you need improvement and deliberately work on them. If you lack a particular skill, find someone who has mastered it and learn from them.

Remember, excellence makes it easier for people to recommend you, while character gives them the confidence to do so.

Position yourself for recommendation by becoming good at what you do. No, don't just be good; strive for excellence!

Reflection
If someone were asked to recommend you today, what would they say about your competence, character, and attitude?

Prayer
Father, help me to develop the skills, character, and excellence that make me worthy of recommendation. Connect me with people who can speak up for me and give me the wisdom to recognise and maximise the opportunities You bring my way. May the right people speak up for me this week, in Jesus' name. Amen!

Discussion Question
What qualities make someone worth recommending, and what practical steps can you take to become that kind of person?

Have a fruitful day.
