No Exception
NO EXCEPTION
What if the thing standing between us and wholehearted obedience to God isn't rebellion—but the exceptions we keep making?
We may obey God in the areas that are easy, comfortable, and convenient, while quietly holding on to the things we don't want to surrender.
Saul didn't reject God's command completely; he simply made exceptions. And sometimes, our greatest problem isn't what we refuse to obey, but what we choose to spare.
Scripture
“Saul and the army made an exception for Agag, and for the choice sheep and cattle. They didn't include them under the terms of the holy ban. But all the rest, which nobody wanted anyway, they destroyed as decreed by the holy ban.”(1 Samuel 15:9)
Explanation
God gave Saul a clear instruction concerning the Amalekites. There was no room for negotiation or personal preference. But when Saul and his army encountered Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, they made an exception.
Interestingly, they destroyed what nobody wanted and spared what they considered valuable.
That is the danger of selective obedience. We can convince ourselves that we are obeying God while quietly keeping the things we don't want to surrender.
For many believers, faith has become a religion of convenience: “What's in it for me?” If obedience costs too much, takes too much time, or requires too much sacrifice, we look for an exception.
But God has not called us to convenient Christianity. He has called us to complete obedience and selfless service.
James reminds us:
“Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.” (James 1:27)
Application
Don't obey only the parts of God's Word that suit you.
Obey when it is convenient and when it is costly.
Serve when you will be noticed and when nobody will notice.
Give when you have enough and when sacrifice is required.
Do what God says—not merely what benefits you.
There should be no “Agag” in our obedience—nothing we deliberately spare because we like it too much to surrender.
God calls us all in, not half and half.
Reflection
Where have I made an exception to God's instruction because obedience was inconvenient, uncomfortable, or costly?
Prayer
Father, deliver me from selective obedience. Give me a heart that obeys You completely, even when obedience costs me something. Help me to serve You and others without constantly asking, “What's in it for me?” May my life reflect genuine faith, selfless service, and wholehearted obedience. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Discussion Question
What is one area where believers are most tempted to make exceptions to God's Word—and why?
Have a fruitful day.
