What's your Poison?

What’s Your Poison?

The choices you make today may be preparing the way for your replacement tomorrow.

Scripture
“David came to Saul and stood before him. Saul liked him immediately and made him his right-hand man.” — 1 Samuel 16:21

Explanation
Imagine how Saul would have reacted if he knew that the young man he was welcoming into his palace would one day take his place on the throne!

When an evil spirit troubled Saul, his advisers recommended finding someone who could play the harp to soothe him. David was recommended, brought before Saul, and immediately won his favour. Saul liked him so much that he made him his armour-bearer.

Unknown to Saul, God was positioning David for the throne. What looked like an ordinary appointment was part of a much bigger story.

We can look at this from two perspectives. First, God was bringing David into the palace, giving him opportunities to learn, serve, and prepare for his future assignment. Second, Saul was unknowingly promoting the very man who would eventually replace him.

Saul was making room for his successor without knowing it!

Life is full of choices whose consequences we may not immediately recognise. Some decisions open doors to our future; others unknowingly set things in motion that may eventually work against us.

Application
People often ask, “What's your poison?” The expression reminds us that what we choose to indulge in can have consequences.

The people you promote, the habits you cultivate, the relationships you nurture, the opportunities you embrace, and the decisions you make today may shape your tomorrow in ways you cannot yet imagine.

This does not mean we should become suspicious of everyone around us. Rather, we should exercise wisdom and discernment. Not everyone we welcome into our lives will contribute positively to our destiny, and not every decision that feels good today will serve us well tomorrow.

Choose wisely. What you are embracing today may be shaping the future you will live in tomorrow.

Reflection
What "David" are you welcoming into your palace today? What choices are you making whose consequences you have not considered? Are you making decisions with wisdom, or simply following what feels good in the moment?

Prayer
Father, grant me the wisdom to make sound decisions and the discernment to recognise what I welcome into my life. Help me to make choices that honour You and positively shape my future. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Discussion Question
What practical steps can we take to ensure that the people, habits, and decisions we embrace today contribute positively to our future rather than undermine it?

Have a fruitful day.
